excellent and suscinct history. i agree. i read the book,"clearing the plains" by james daschuk. it was a hard read of constant death. we have the same thing at the present time, that's even harder.

Thanks John. Yes - Daschuk's book is devastating and you can see why Canada from that history has some kind of kinship with Israel.

i am encouraged by the recent fifteen supreme court decisions in favour of indigenous rights, and by the increased awareness of the mass graves at residential schools, however there are way too many people refusing to accept the murderous history. that has to be faced to have reconcilliation.

nothing changes that canada and the united states were founded on genocide. pierre poilievre recently gave a speach to the manitoba frontier institute which is an absolutely genocide denialist organization. before him o'toole and scheer made denialist statements. so there is a long way to go.

Thanks for this. As always, through and enlightening. There’s an argument that I heard Brett O’Shea make on rev left that Israel helped create Hamas, especially through their destruction of the far more sympathetic PLO and PFLP. The goal was to put an “fundamental Islamist” organization into power m who Israel could consistently call “terrorists” and so justify apartheid on the grounds that they were combating “terrorism”. Does this idea seem plausible?

It's not exactly incorrect, but it is not quite right. When Fatah was in power, Israel's position was they had to go. Now it's Hamas, and they have to go. There were times when Israel put more pressure on Fatah than on Hamas. But the settler-colonial method is to demonize any leaders from the colony. I don't think it's correct, in other words, to think of Hamas as an Israeli creation.
